How to Make Jatamansi Oil at Home
Jatamansi (also known as Spikenard or Nardostachys jatamansi) is a powerful herb in Ayurveda known for its calming, hair-nourishing, and skin-soothing properties. Making Jatamansi oil at home ensures purity and effectiveness, and it's more economical compared to store-bought versions.
Ingredients Needed:
- 50 grams dried Jatamansi roots
- 250 ml carrier oil (cold-pressed coconut, sesame, or olive oil)
- Glass jar or bottle for storage
- Heavy-bottomed pan for heating
- Cheesecloth or fine strainer
Step-by-Step Preparation:
Step 1: Clean the Roots
Wash the dried Jatamansi roots thoroughly to remove dirt or dust. Let them dry in the sun for 2–3 hours.
Step 2: Crush the Roots
Chop or crush the roots to help release their natural oils.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
Warm the carrier oil in a pan over low flame. Add the crushed roots to the oil.
Step 4: Slow Cook the Oil
Simmer the mixture on low heat for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. The oil will become aromatic.
Step 5: Cool and Strain
Let the oil cool completely, then strain it through a cheesecloth.
Step 6: Store Properly
Store the filtered oil in a clean glass bottle in a cool, dry place.
